About Glendale

Glendale is a large suburb in the Greater Los Angeles area, just 10 miles northeast of the city center. Officially incorporated in 1906, the city has become one of the largest cities in the county.

Glendale was a pioneer in the aviation industry for many decades. In 1923, its Grand Central Airport became the first on the West Coast to build a paved runway and the city was a valuable training site for P-38 pilots during the World War II. While the aviation industry continues to be important, Glendale is also home to other large companies, including animation house DreamWorks and food giant Nestle USA. Its Forest Lawn Memorial Park is the final resting place of many of Hollywood's biggest stars, and historic buildings such as El Miradero and Verdugo Adobe are reminders of Glendale's storied past.

Living in Glendale

Glendale offers a laid back suburban lifestyle, with all the amenities of a big city just a short drive away. It's also easy to access some of California's most well-known beaches. With close to 50 public parks within city limits, there are plenty of places to enjoy the Glendale sun.

The city also offers a number of community events, ranging from arts and culture to athletic and kid-focused activities. You can take a Japanese stick fighting class, learn about local medicinal plants on a group hike or even participate in read-aloud sessions with service dogs in training. There's no shortage of unique events in Glendale that create a tight-knit sense of community.

Because of its close proximity to Hollywood, many entertainment companies providing a range of jobs are based in Glendale. Glendale is also home to the headquarters of Disney Consumer Products, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Color Me Mine, DineEquity/IHOP, KABC-7 and Whole Foods Market.

Glendale Neighborhoods

Here are a few of the great neighborhoods you'll want to explore in Glendale:

Brand Boulevard

The Brand Boulevard district is part of Glendale's downtown area and was designed as a live-work-play community. Urban living puts apartments and lofts just floors above popular restaurants, shops and bars.

El Miradero

El Miradero is home to the former mansion of Leslie C. Brand, the original developer of the city of Glendale. His 1904 home is now the Brand Library, donated upon Brand's death with the request that it be used to enrich the arts and culture scene in the city.

Montrose-Verdugo City

Montrose-Verdugo City is a family-friendly community known for its variety of local events and festivals. One of the most popular is the Montrose Craft Beer Fest, gathering many of Glendale's favorite craft breweries and restaurants for a celebration of food and drink.

Montecito Park

The Montecito Park neighborhood is nestled in Glendale's northern region, with large ranch homes filling its tree-lined streets. Although it's one of the more expensive communities in Glendale, it does offer larger lots and houses than many other areas of the city do.

Glendale Schools

Glendale is served by the Glendale Unified School District, which manages elementary, middle and high schools in the city. Most of the private schools in the city are faith-based, with a few of the largest including Chamlian Armenian School and Holy Family High School.

Glendale Community College offers a large number of two-year degree programs if you are interested in pursuing higher education.

Glendale Housing

Glendale offers a mix of family homes and modern apartments. Glendale is a suburb with a dense population, so large homes on generous plots of land are quite expensive. Apartments are typically a more affordable choice, although rent is higher than the national average. Glendale's homes are also more expensive than in many parts of the country, but strong appreciation value is a significant plus.
