Maitland is a small suburb of Orlando, Florida, best known for its historic architecture and proximity to many of the state's top tourist attractions. In addition to desirable residential communities, Maitland is home to successful commercial developments and several cultural institutions.

The History of Maitland

One of the oldest cities in central Florida, Maitland was originally established in 1838 as an Army post known as Fort Maitland. The area quickly attracted residents with its natural spring water and peaceful pine groves, promising a quiet life after the chaos of the Civil War. In its early years, Maitland was called Lake Maitland, known for its plentiful orange groves and winter resorts that drew visitors in search of warm weather. It remained largely rural for quite some time, the landscape dotted with large oak trees that had been planted by a local council member.

In the mid-1920s, suburban sprawl from Orlando began to trickle into the community, spurring rapid growth of its residential sectors. In 1959, the word "Lake" was dropped from the city's name, and it was officially incorporated as the city of Maitland.

Jobs in Maitland

The Maitland economy is supported by businesses in a variety of sectors, but professional services and finance companies are among its largest employers. Insurance and finance company CNA Insurance and business services provider Digital Risk provide thousands of professional-level jobs in the area. In greater Orange County, Walt Disney World Resort, Florida Hospital and Universal Orlando are among the largest employers.

Maitland Schools

Maitland public schools fall within the borders of Orange County Public Schools. There are several private schools in the area, including faith-based campuses like the Jewish Academy of Orlando and secular campuses such as Maitland Montessori School.

There are no large public universities in Maitland, but you do have your choice of a few small private campuses.
