The History of Clinton Township

Clintown Township was originally settled as Huron Township in 1818, taking its name from the nearby Huron River. However, when another Huron River (south of Detroit) led to confusion in the area, the Michigan Territorial Legislature elected to rename the river and township. Both were named after DeWitt Clinton, a well-liked governor in New York. Clinton had played a large part in the construction of the Erie Canal, which had provided a route for settlers to come to Michigan.

With lucrative industries such as lumbering, sawmills and gristmills in its early years, combined with strong municipal growth programs over many decades, Clinton Township grew and evolved to become to largest township in Michigan.

Clinton welcomes a range of businesses, but two stand out as the township's major employers. Chippewa Valley Schools and L'Anse Creuse Public Schools provide thousands of local jobs, including teaching, administrative and support staff positions.
