Farmington is a small city in southeastern Michigan, less than 20 miles outside the city of Detroit. Because Farmington is largely surrounded by the community of Farmington Hills, the two are often considered a singular town. However, each maintains its own identity and independent city status. Farmington is perhaps best known for its historical downtown district, Victorian architecture and top-rated schools.

The History of Farmington

Before the first European settlers moved into the area where Farmington is now located, Native Americans inhabited the land. A Quaker settler named Arthur Power founded the community in 1824, arriving in the area from his home state of New York. Initially, the community and surrounding land were simply named Quakertown after its residents. However, Power decided to rename the settlement Farmington after his hometown. Between 1850 and 1890, the town blossomed into a thriving community.

Living in Farmington

Farmington may be a small town, but it offers plenty of local things to do and see. Strolling through the historical downtown is a popular local pastime, especially since renovations that have added new lighting, landscaping and brick paver sidewalks. There are also outdoor parks, a civic theater and the Governor Warner Museum, as well as a few community colleges in the surrounding area that provide easily accessible training and education to local residents.
