The History of Gladstone

The Kansas City area's history began in 1821 when Missouri entered the Union as the 24th state. A Frenchman named Francois Chouteau rebuilt the town after a flood destroyed much of its structures in 1826, and several of the other families who settled the area were also from France.

The railroad introduced new economic opportunities for the area, though river shipments remained a popular way to transport goods to other parts of the United States. Kansas City itself covers more than 300 square miles thanks to its repeated annexation of neighboring cities and towns, but Gladstone remains its own independent city.
