Cheektowaga is a thriving town in New York's Erie County. It's one of the largest suburbs of Buffalo and an inner-ring suburb of the larger city. Cheektowaga contains many neighborhoods as well as the village of Sloan and part of the village of Depew.

The History of Cheektowaga

Native Americans originally inhabited the area that's now Cheektowaga. European settlers established the first settlements in the early 1800s, forming the town of Amherst. In 1821, the town was divided, creating the separate towns of Amherst and Cheektowaga. Cheektowaga was incorporated in 1839. During this period, the town was a rural area, with the majority of families living on and operating small farms. By the time the Civil War came, the town had several railroads running through it.

In 1892, the town saw its first electric trolley, which ran until 1930. After World War II, Cheektowaga grew significantly as a result of the post-war housing boom, and extensive housing developments were created throughout the community.
