The History of Duncanville
The area where Duncanville is now located welcomed its first settlers in 1845. Crawford Trees, a resident of Illinois, purchased several thousand acres of land south of Camp Dallas. The railroad reached the area in 1880, constructed by the Chicago, Texas and Mexican Central Railway and Duncan Switch was established, named for a line foreman that worked for the company. In 1882, the small town's first postmaster renamed the community Duncanville.
It grew slowly over the next few decades, gaining a general store, a domino parlor, a school and a pharmacy. By 1933, the town was still fairly small, home to about 300 people. In the 1960s and 70s, Duncanville grew rapidly, becoming a very desirable suburb in the Dallas area. The 1950 population was just 850, but had multiplied to more than 14,000 within 20 years.
