Despite its small size, Seven Corners is a very diverse community in Virginia's Fairfax County, serving primarily as a commercial center. Although the community has a mailing address of the nearby city of Falls Church, it's not officially located within that city.

The History of Seven Corners

Originally, Seven Corners was called Fort Buffalo, a name that lasted from the Civil War through the 1950s. During the war, the area was named for a fort built by the 21st New York Infantry that stood on the southern side of the present-day intersection of the Leesburg Pike and Sleepy Hollow Road. The location was chosen for its strategic sweeping views to the south and east, which provided the ability to spot Confederate Army troops as they approached.

In the 1950s, the city was renamed Seven Corners. The name was a nod to the seven-cornered intersection established by the construction of Route 50. Although the intersection didn't last long, the name stuck.

Living in Seven Corners

Seven Corners is a small community, spanning less than 1 square mile of land. It's built on Munson's Hill, and its elevated location offers scenic views of the neighboring Upton's Hills as well as sweeping vistas toward Fairfax City and Annendale.

Despite its small size, the area does offer local amenities. The Seven Corners Shopping Center was the first major shopping center to open in the Washington, D.C., area, in 1956. Today, it's home to several big-box stores. The Eden Center is another notable retail center in Seven Corners, primarily occupied by Vietnamese-American shop owners. You can explore more than 120 different shops and restaurants, including a large collection of pho soup restaurants and banh mi delis.
