The History of Southampton

Like many areas of Pennsylvania, the Southampton community was first settled by Quakers in the 1700s. The town was named for Southhampton, England, the seaport from which many of its Quaker residents had sailed. William Penn, a prominent Quaker leader, purchased the land in the area from the local Native American tribes using valuable commodities, establishing a peaceful coexistence that the Native Americans and Quakers enjoyed for many years.

Southhampton was a small farming community until the railroad arrived in the 1870s, bringing tradesmen and craftsmen to the area. It also provided an easy means for commuting into Philadelphia for work and trade, which helped Southampton flourish.
